Dublin's pride...

Ireland has been subject to English domination since the late 12^th Century, struggling for freedom and for the right of a independent country, and I bet this state of oppression, linked both to difficult relations with England and with the historical repression of Catholics, has been the beginning of the ideology of Irish nationalism.
In my opinion this idea of nationalism not only refers to political movements, which don't belong to the majority of the population, but mostly affects normal people and the general impression that this country gives to foreigners like me...
Since I first came here I positively noticed how proud people were of their nation and of the idea of being part of a united and much bigger imagined community; something that not every person can feel in his heart, a sensation that only belongs to countries which never stopped fighting for their rights and whose ancestral pride is present in every cell of their inhabitants' bodies.
From notorious pop singers to worldwide famous writers and amazing painters, the cultural atmosphere is a strong component of this ideology, and walking around Dublin you can't miss it ! Monuments of Joyce and Wilde, statues of political figures like Parnell, prosper national theatre shows and performances, the feeling is really powerful and charming, so...
In spite of alcohol exasperate passion and post-economic boom suburb degradation, I am quite happy with this slice of Ireland, and with the pride these people show, whichever is their source of inspiration: the romantic fight for independence, the amazing talent of James Joyce or the pop sound of U2 !!
